We’ve all seen those beautifully decorated porches all over Instagram. The ones with the huge staircase leading up to a door that looks like it belongs in a fairytale. Fully decorated with mounds of pumpkins, mums the size of bushes, & cornstalks galore! While those porches are STUNNING, it’s not always realistic to spend that much time or money on some porch decor. You gotta work with what you’ve got! So in this post, I’m going to give you a few simple tips on creating a Fall porch that’s “Insta worthy” without all the fuss.
Step 1 is deciding the kind of theme you’re going for. Are you going traditional with lots of orange pumpkins, cornstalks, etc? Are you wanting a more neutral porch with some white & Cinderella style pumpkins? Think about the kind of vibe or color scheme you’re wanting, then we can talk about decor 😉
Now that you’ve decided what theme you want, you can go pick out some pumpkins (& a lot of them)! We’re talking different colors, sizes, shapes, the whole thing! Orange isn’t my most favorite color in the world, so Cinderella pumpkins are my best friend! I love the pretty sage green, peach, & white pumpkins. I got a ton of those in different shapes/sizes, as well as a bunch of the mini white pumpkins (with a few orange ones sprinkled in there). But get whatever YOU like…make it unique to your style!
We got our pumpkins (the most essential part), so now it’s time for some extras! Think mums, a bale of hay, cornstalks, a wreath, a cute Fall doormat, lanterns (you can put electric candles & mini pumpkins in the lanterns), etc. You can mix & match however you like! If you have a minimal budget & minimal space, pick up a couple mums or cornstalks to go with your pumpkins & call it a day! This is the part where you can really personalize your porch & make it your own.
My aesthetic is pretty minimal, so I don’t like my decor to be too extravagant. Less really can be more! I let the pumpkins & mums do most of the work on my porch. What we did this year, is pick up a ton of various pumpkins (mostly neutral ones with the exception of a few orange ones), staggered them on the steps, & put some on the porch near the door. Our front porch isn’t huge, but it has a few steps leading up to it, which is the perfect place for putting a majority of your pumpkins. I think the steps leading up to your porch should be where you put the most focus on decorating. It’ll really make your whole porch stand out! I put two big pumpkins on each step (one on each side), & put a few medium/smaller pumpkins on the steps surrounding them. Tilt them, stack them, & make it look effortless (doing this also adds a lot of dimension)! At the very bottom of the stairs, I placed two large mums (one on each side, both the same color). I also did the same at the top of the stairs. I feel like it just looks really classy! Leaving them in their nursery pots is 100% fine, or you could put them in galvanized buckets for more of a rustic Fall look!
We also placed a bunch of pumpkins near our front door, along with a lantern that holds an electric candle & a couple baby pumpkins. I think we’re going to add a couple cornstalks up there in the corner as well, (it’s not quite finished)! It’s so much fun to add little things along the way & really make it your own!
That’s really all the tips I have! Just think of the kind of vibe you want to go for, & make it your own! There really are so many ways you can personalize your porch. If you decorate your porch this year, send me a photo – I’d LOVE to see it!!
